Inquiry and measurement skills are practiced and demonstrated throughout the year in all units of study. {For additional information login to websites provided.}
Inquiry~Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate: http://enhancinged.wgbh.org/research/eeeee.html
Measurement~ Fifth grade students will practice and improve their ability to use the metric system when measuring length, distance, mass, weight, volume, and density. They will use multiple strategies to convert metric units: Kilo, Hecto, Deka, Meter{Base}, Deci, Centi and Milli (King Henry Doesn’t Mind Drinking Chocolate Milk).

Chemistry~Fifth grade students study basic chemistry concepts using inquiry. They will practice using the Periodic Table to identifying the atomic number, atomic mass, element symbol, number of protons, electrons and neutrons. They also will study the structure of the atom by using several atom models including Bohr's model and the electron cloud/ modern model.

Physics~Fifth grade students study motion and forces using inquiry. They will practice using the laws of motion and the forces of gravity, friction, and magnetism. They will practice calculating speed, unbalanced and balanced forces, work, power and velocity.

Geology~Fifth grade students will study how the movement of tectonic plates and the forces of the agents of erosion change the Earth. They will practice using the evidence left in the layers of the earth (paleontology, archeology, geology, mineralogy).

Biology/Ecology~ Fifth grade students will study the how the populations of living organisms change over time, reproduce, react to environmental changes, and share in the success of all living organisms on Earth.
